Alibaba vs Canton Fair: Which is better for finding a real manufacturer?

Neither one hands you a real factory. Both mix factories and trading companies, and on both the label is the company’s own claim. A third of the Canton Fair exhibitors that state a company type call themselves trading companies, according to a Standard Trade analysis of all 36,524 profiles from the autumn 2026 fair.1 On Alibaba, sellers choose their own supplier type, and Alibaba tells buyers to “do your homework beyond the platform badges.”2

The difference is in what each is good for. Alibaba is good for comparing prices and sending many inquiries quickly. The Canton Fair is good for meeting the people who run the line and seeing samples in hand. Many buyers use both: they search online first, then meet the shortlist.

Is Alibaba or the Canton Fair better for small orders?

Alibaba, usually. Its search lets you filter by minimum order, and many listings show one. At the Canton Fair, most exhibitors publish no minimum at all. Of the fair’s 200,204 online product listings, 18% show a minimum order and 9% show a price.1 Where Phase 3 exhibitors do list one, the median is 1,000 pieces, though the first order at that minimum costs about $2,800 at the median.8

A low minimum is not proof of a factory, on either one. A trader with stock can sell 50 pieces, and a factory that makes to order usually can’t.

Is a Verified Supplier on Alibaba a real factory?

It is a company that paid for Alibaba’s top tier and passed a check by an inspection firm such as SGS or TÜV.5 That check confirms the company and its premises exist. It is not a promise that the premises make your product. Read the report itself, and look for production lines making the item you want.

How do I check a factory from either source?

Run the same three checks on a supplier from Alibaba or from a booth:

  1. Business license. Ask for it and read the scope. A factory’s scope covers making the product, while a trader’s covers buying and selling it.
  2. Live video walk. Ask to see the line running, on a call you start, not a pre-recorded tour.
  3. US customs records. If the supplier says it ships to US buyers, its name should appear as shipper on US import records for your product.

Our factory or trader guide goes through each check, with the questions to ask at a booth.

What do I do now that the autumn 2026 fair is over?

The online directory stays up between sessions, so you can still find exhibitors and message them. Exhibitors from the autumn fair expect follow-up in November and December, and many will quote from the samples they showed. The next fair is the 141st session, from April 15 to May 5, 2027, and overseas buyers have to pre-register for a badge.7,6

Trade Evidence searches the autumn 2026 exhibitors and their product listings by product, minimum order and price, and flags the profiles that look like traders. Use it to build your shortlist now, and meet the shortlist in April.

Common questions

  1. Is Alibaba cheaper than the Canton Fair?

To search, yes: Alibaba costs nothing to use, and the fair costs flights, a hotel and often a visa. The prices you are quoted can differ less than you’d think, since many companies sell through both. Compare the same company’s quote online and at its booth.

  2. Are Canton Fair suppliers more reliable than Alibaba suppliers?

Not by label. A third of Canton Fair exhibitors that state a type call themselves traders, and a profile is the company’s own claim.1 What the fair adds is the chance to meet the team and handle samples. Check the business license and US customs records either way.

  3. Can I use Alibaba to contact Canton Fair exhibitors?

Often, yes. Many Canton Fair exhibitors also have an Alibaba storefront, so you can search the company name there and compare its listings with its fair profile.

  4. When is the next Canton Fair?

The 141st session runs in Guangzhou from April 15 to May 5, 2027.7 Overseas buyers must pre-register in advance to get a badge.6
