# Server memory prices 2026: Why pulled RAM can be worth more than the server

Andy Wang, Cofounder at Standard Trade · 12 October 2026

Memory makers have moved capacity toward high-bandwidth memory for AI, and ordinary server memory got scarce. A dealer guide from August reports that the shortage roughly doubled server DRAM prices in a single quarter.[^1] DatacenterDisk puts the rise in DDR4 ECC registered memory at 60 to 80%, and Micron's CEO has said he expects supply to stay tight into 2027.[^2]

For anyone buying used servers, that changes the math. In a server with a lot of memory, the modules can be worth more on their own than the server is as a whole unit. Whether you sell the box or part it out is now a real decision for each unit.

## How much have server memory prices moved?

**Table 1. Reported server memory and server prices, 2026**

| Measure | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Server DRAM prices | Roughly doubled in a single quarter | PC Server & Parts[^1] |
| DDR4 ECC registered memory | Up 60 to 80% | DatacenterDisk[^2] |
| DDR4 server memory, median listing | About $9.06 per GB | DatacenterDisk tracker, Oct 12[^3] |
| DDR5 server memory, median listing | About $44.00 per GB | DatacenterDisk tracker, Oct 12[^3] |

*These are reported figures and listing prices, not completed sales. Prices vary widely by rank, speed and seller.*

The squeeze reaches whole servers too. The same August guide reports that Dell and Lenovo have each raised list prices twice since December, that HPE rewrote its terms so a price can move up to the day of shipment, and that HPE's CEO puts DRAM and NAND at more than half the materials cost of a new server.[^1] Refurbished units are priced from what the seller paid for them, so the gap between new and refurbished is unusually wide right now.

## When is the memory worth more than the server?

When the server has a lot of it. A refurbished Dell R740 with two Xeon Gold 6130 processors, 64 GB of memory and no drives was listed at $1,050 in October.[^4] Fill the same chassis with 384 GB of DDR4, and at the tracker's median listing price of about $9 per GB the memory alone lists for roughly $3,500.[^3]

That isn't a profit figure. Listing prices aren't sales, pulling and testing modules takes labor, and selling them one at a time takes time. But it shows why a high-memory server is two possible products: a whole unit for a buyer who needs the server, or a set of modules for buyers who need memory.

**Table 2. Sell whole or part out?**

| Lean toward selling whole | Lean toward parting out |
|---|---|
| Low memory, recent CPUs, a buyer who wants the full system | High memory, older CPUs, steady demand for those exact modules |
| You can test and warranty the full unit | You can test modules reliably and sell in volume |
| Fast turnover matters more than top price | You can hold stock while modules sell |

Decide this per unit, and don't add both values. A module you sell separately isn't in the server you sell whole.

## What should I check before I count on memory value?

- **Exact module identity.** Size, DDR generation, speed, rank and part number. A manifest that says only "64 GB" doesn't tell you what you can sell.
- **Whether the manifest's totals add up.** In one public lot we reviewed in October, a server's memory total didn't match its own module count.
- **The generation you're buying.** Older platforms run DDR3, and the reported 2026 rises are mainly for DDR4 and DDR5.
- **Test capacity.** Untested memory sells at a discount, and a return costs more than the margin on a single module.
- **Timing.** Shortages end. Price a lot on what you can sell within your normal turnover window, not on today's peak.

## Common questions

### Why did server memory get so expensive in 2026?
Memory makers have moved production toward high-bandwidth memory for AI accelerators, which left less for standard server DRAM, while demand from AI data centers rose at the same time.[^2]

### Are refurbished servers cheaper than new right now?
Generally yes, by a wider margin than usual, because refurbished units are priced from their original acquisition cost while new servers carry 2026 memory prices.[^1] Compare real quotes for your configuration.

### Will memory prices fall in 2027?
Nobody knows. Micron's CEO has said he expects tightness into 2027.[^2] Plan for prices to move, and don't buy a lot that only works at today's peak.

Standard Trade is an AI commerce lab. Our agents do the homework behind a business purchase, so buyers know who to trust and what to pay. For refurbishers, that means reading every line of a lot's manifest, on auction sites most buyers never open, before the lot closes.
